If you are new to yoga, learning lesson etiquette and knowing what to expect from your first lesson may be overwhelming. Fortunately, yoga is a non-judgemental community and Burgundie's teaching style is non-dogmatic. Here are some answers to commonly asked questions about yoga.
Yoga will improve your overall fitness level. Yoga also helps reduce stress. Consider that time in the yoga studio as "me time" where you get to shut out everything and take a break.
Yoga benefits your body, mind, and spirit. You can expect improved strength, stamina, balance, and flexibility. Regular yoga practice reduces cholesterol, and your body's aches and pain, often better than pain medication. Yoga can reduce stress and improve sleep. The spiritual aspects of yoga affect each person differently, but can be quite profound.
Nope. Your flexibility will increase as you practice yoga. If you can't touch your toes, Burgundie will ask you to bend your knees!
There are many styles of yoga and many different teachers making it hard to generalize. There are gentle yoga classes and rigorous yoga classes. Yoga is like meditation in motion.
Provided you have an attentive instructor, you should not be uncomfortable, or need to twist yourself into a pretzel. If you are uncomfortable, say something or ease out of the pose.
The answer depends on your fitness goals and current physical condition. Burgundie teaches a Beginner's class that is a perfect way to start out. If you feel you are ready for something more, try an Intermediate class. Chat with Burgundie about it if you aren't sure!
Comfortable clothing that allows you to move and bend freely is best. Many yogis wear long, fitted, strechy pants and shirts that allow free movement of the arms and shoulders. Overall the focus is on being comfortable with what you're wearing. Practice reaching your arms overhead as well as folding forward. You don't want your shirt to ride up or to slide around your neck!
For beginners, all you need is a water bottle and a workout towel. Burgundie provides a loaner mat and props until you are ready to purchase your own.
Wear comfortable clothing. If this is an in-home lesson, Burgundie will arrive about ten minutes early to get set up and discuss how you are feeling before your first lesson. You are welcome to use the Burgundie's mats and props. You can do some yoga research beforehand, but it's not required.
Yes, but always check with your doctor first to be safe. The breathing while holding a difficult pose will teach you to be comfortable when uncomfortable, which is a nice skill to have when you go into labor.
Yes. In fact, yoga offers great benefits to children including learning self-health and body awareness while reducing stress and increasing strength, stamina, mental focus, and flexibility.
